The Faith Shaped Heart: Why Spiritual Formation Matters
Whether we realize it or not, we are all being formed. Our habits shape us. Our relationships shape us. Our fears shape us. Our disappointments shape us. Even the stories we quietly tell ourselves about who we are and how the world works leave their mark on our hearts. Formation is not optional.
The real question is not whether we are being shaped, but what is shaping us. That question sits at the heart of this space. Because Christian faith was never meant to be merely about agreeing with certain beliefs or collecting theological information. It was always meant to be transformational. Jesus did not simply invite people to think differently; He invited them to become different—to love differently, live differently, trust differently, and increasingly reflect His character in the world.
That is the heart of spiritual formation.
What Spiritual Formation Is
Spiritual formation is the ongoing work of being shaped into the likeness of Christ through the presence of the Holy Spirit, the truth of Scripture, and intentional practices that open our lives to God’s transforming work. That may sound lofty, but in everyday life, spiritual formation is often much more practical than we imagine. It is learning to respond with peace where anxiety once ruled. Choosing forgiveness when resentment feels easier. Learning to recognize God’s voice in the noise of everyday life. Allowing Scripture to confront not just our thoughts, but the deeper patterns and assumptions that shape how we live.
At its core, spiritual formation is about becoming the kind of person whose life increasingly reflects Jesus. That distinction matters because spiritual formation is not the same thing as behavior management. It is not simply trying harder to be nicer, do better, or fail less. Many of us were taught, either explicitly or implicitly, that faith was primarily about effort—about keeping ourselves in line through discipline and determination. But external behavior without inward transformation rarely lasts. God is after something much deeper than surface-level compliance. He is interested in the heart.
Why The Faith Shaped Heart?
I chose the name The Faith Shaped Heart because spiritual formation is ultimately about what happens beneath the surface. In Scripture, the heart is far more than emotion. It is the center of our desires, thoughts, loves, motivations, and decisions. It is the place from which our lives are shaped.
And faith is far more than intellectual agreement. Faith is trust. Surrender. Relationship. Obedience. Dependence.
A faith-shaped heart is one that is being continually formed by the presence of God—not perfectly, but genuinely. It is a heart that slowly becomes softer where it was once hard, stronger where it was weak, more surrendered where it was resistant, and more whole where it was wounded.
That kind of transformation does not happen overnight. And it does not happen through information alone. It happens as we make space for God to work in us over time.
What This Space Will Explore
Here we will explore the practices and perspectives that help shape a life with God. That includes learning to engage Scripture not merely for information, but for transformation. It means learning to pray honestly and expectantly, listening for the Holy Spirit’s guidance, and navigating seasons of transition, disappointment, and waiting with faith.
We will also explore spiritual practices that deepen intimacy with God and help us become emotionally and spiritually healthy disciples. Because spiritual formation is not about becoming impressive Christians. It is about becoming faithful ones.
An Invitation to Begin
If all of this feels meaningful but also a little intimidating, let me say this clearly: you do not need to have everything figured out to begin. You do not need a perfect prayer life, a seminary education, or some hidden level of spiritual maturity that everyone else seems to possess. You simply need willingness.
A heart that is willing to pray, Lord, shape me. That prayer can change far more than we realize. And if that is your desire, then you are in the right place. Welcome to The Faith Shaped Heart.
